Meet the Ember Team

  • Tammy Whittaker

    CEO and Founder

A registered nurse with an MBA, Tammy has years of home care leadership experience. Innovation in healthcare has always been her focus.

"I come from a family of nurses, but that couldn't prepare us for the emotional toll it would take when my father needed palliative care at home. We were spending so much time wayfinding and advocating to find the right home care fit. I decided there had to be a better way to help families at home. That's why I started Ember. To provide true wrap around support, direction and care to families in times of crisis. Someone to take the mental load away when you just don't have the capacity."

“My grandparents were fiercely independent. They lived on their farm in rural Alberta, ran a large commercial greenhouse and had gardens the size of football fields. I spend much of my childhood on their farm selling plants, “hunting” squirrels and catching frogs. I still remember sneaking out of bed early in the morning, stepping into my grandfathers too big rubber boots and making the crisp walk in my nighty to meet my grandmother at the raspberry patch. We picked every morning before it got unbearably hot, then washed our berries and froze them until we were ready to make jam at the end of the season.

When my grandmother started to decline, she had a terrible time accepting her limitations. She was gloriously stubborn, which drove her children mad as they tried to help her. She didn’t know the meaning of quit. My grandfather was no better. He was still hauling coal at the age of 86 to stoke the pot stove fires in the greenhouse, lest the plants freeze overnight. While moving them into a facility would have been safer, my grandparents chose to age in place until the bitter end. With the help of my family, and homecare, my grandfather was 98 years old when they finally left the farm.

I know better than most how important it is for people to maintain their independence, age in place, and make the right fit with a caregiver. I also know how hard it can be for folks to accept help. Every day ember helps people stay where they want to be is nod to my grandparents and the real reason, I do what I do.”
